Recreation Center to host Free Rec Days

The Upper Iowa University Recreation Center staff will host Free Rec Days from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, and from 1 – 9 p.m. Sunday, March 10. During the two events, non-paying members will be provided free use of the rec center’s services including weight and cardiovascular machines, rec center gymnasium, indoor track and group fitness programs.
“Not only do we look forward to showcasing the wide variety of amenities we offer to the entire community throughout the year, but we are equally excited to unveil the newly installed multipurpose flooring throughout our facility,” UIU Director of Campus Recreation Adam Carpenter said.
Carpenter noted free activities during the event include a Boot Camp from noon – 1 p.m. on March 6 and from 3 – 4 p.m. on March 10, and a yoga class from 5 – 6 p.m. March 6 and from 6 – 7 p.m. March 10.
The Rec Center was constructed in 2001 and includes a weight and fitness room, UIU’s wrestling facility, a group fitness room, an upper and lower three-lane track, ceiling-suspended batting cages, male and female locker rooms with showers, and basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton courts. In addition to the communitywide impact, the new flooring and rec center enhancements will benefit both traditional students and student-athletes.
Alumni Steve ’73 and Diane ’73 (Kinkead) Harms of West Des Moines, Iowa, donated $750,000 to the improvement project, which is to benefit enhancements to the rec center. In addition to the Harms’ gift and over 150 other private donations, the University has secured a $30,000 contribution over three years from the City of Fayette and a $5,000 pledge from Fayette County. Phase II of the Rec Center renovations include the installation of a new HVAC system.
Persons attending the events are asked to register at the Rec Center’s front desk. During winter months, visitors are required to bring a second pair of tennis shoes to wear in the facility.
The UIU Recreation Center offers single, couple, family, track and track/couple memberships. Special group fitness programs are also scheduled throughout the year. For additional information, call 563.425.5669, email reccenter@uiu.edu or visit uiu.edu/rec.
