PBL Chapter earns ‘Leadership’ honors

Ten future business leaders from Upper Iowa University attended the recent State Leadership Conference in Ames, Iowa. The Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Chapter members showcased their skills and knowledge, and for their efforts the UIU students earned first place for the largest percentage increase in chapter membership (43 percent) and second-place honors for their local chapter annual business report.

Lynn Isvik, UIU PBL Chapter adviser, noted that for the first time a student from a UIU Center competed as a member of the virtual chapter team. Rick Johnson, a student at UIU-Des Moines Center, placed first in Justice Administration and Sports Management & Marketing, and third in Organizational Behavior.

“I am very proud of how all of our students represented UIU and I look forward to them competing at the 2017 National Leadership Conference in Anaheim this June,” said Isvik. “The Chapter members are extremely grateful for the support they have received from the entire UIU community as they prepared for the recent competition.”

The UIU PBL Chapter individual and team award winners are as follows:

Dustin Hoefs, a senior marketing and management major from Horicon, Wisconsin, placed first in Entrepreneurship Concepts, third in Marketing Concepts, and fifth in Management Concepts.

Bethany Stock, a junior business administration and communication studies major from Waukon, Iowa, placed first in Marketing Analysis & Decision Making, second in Desktop Publishing, and fifth in Entrepreneurial Concepts.

Kaylonna McKee, a junior marketing major minoring in communication studies major from Waukon, Iowa, placed first in Marketing Analysis & Decision Making, second in Desktop Publishing, and fifth in Client Service.

Meg DeHaven, a senior marketing and human resources major from Oelwein, Iowa, placed first in Organizational Behavior, Project Management and Retail Management.

Matt Danielson, a junior marketing and management major from Mason City, Iowa, placed second in Contemporary Sports Issues and fifth in Sports Management & Marketing.

Julia Szepieniec, a freshman chemistry major from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, placed first in Business Communication and second in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.

Hunter Schulte, a freshman business administration major from Winthrop, Iowa, placed third in Contemporary Sports Issues and fifth in Marketing Concepts.

Cory Mullins, a sophomore financial management and marketing major from West Des Moines, Iowa, placed second in Justice Administration and third in Microeconomics and Personal Finance.

Monica Rohe, a senior accounting and financial management major from Onalaska, Wisconsin, placed first in Cost Accounting and second in Accounting for Professionals and Financial Concepts.

PBL is the college division of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) that is dedicated to preparing students to enter business-related fields. The 2017 National Leadership Conference will draw thousands of students to test their knowledge and skills through competitive events. Students also share successes and learn new ideas about shaping their careers through workshops and exhibits. The high-energy, intensive two-day conference is focused on leadership experience.
