Graduating from UIU’s online program in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in public administration, Brown opened Scratch in her hometown of Cedar Falls, Iowa, in June 2010. Now baking over 250 traditional and nontraditional flavors of cupcakes, Brown has since opened other locations in Waterloo, West Des Moines and Coralville. In addition, the Scratch Curbside truck serves customers across the state. Her focus on philanthropy while providing jobs in the Cedar Valley earned the successful business owner a spot on that area’s ‘20 Under 40’ list for 2012.
The Iowa Entrepreneur series features locally owned businesses in Iowa. Each episode spotlights two businesses and the stories of how they overcame personal and financial struggles.
Natalie Brown and Scratch Cupcakery was also previously featured in Upper Iowa University’s The Bridge Winter 2013 edition alumni magazine. The story can still be viewed at uiubridge.com/2014/10/13/life-is-sweet/.
