FAYETTE, Iowa (January 8, 2015) – An exploration in encaustic paintings takes center stage in the Bing-Davis Gallery on the Upper Iowa University Fayette campus January 15 through February 13. Barbara Walton’s “Waxing Poetics” exhibition will feature several original works by the Iowa State University College of Design associate professor.

“My art is inspired by a love of nature and seeing nature as an active force in my life experience,” said Walton. “We are a part of the natural world, not separate.”

Walton’s expression of nature as the subject is poetic and not a literal interpretation. The subjects exist, she said, within the ambiguity of space or circumstance. The text used in the pieces comes from poems, prayers, invocations, songs and manifestos, which elevate nature as well as bind the viewer to it. Walton’s intention is to evoke inexpressible longing or memory.

“We are so pleased to be able to share Barbara Walton’s works with the community at-large,” said Elissa Wenthe, associate professor of art and director of the gallery. “Her work in encaustic inspires so many feelings and emotions. Having her exhibition at the gallery will be a highlight of this year’s shows. This is definitely one you don’t want to miss.”

The Bing-Davis Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. To see more of Walton’s work, go to http://www.barbaraewalton.com.
