Upper Iowa University has announced its 2018 Scholarships and Awards Recognition Banquet recipients. The honorees are listed alphabetically.

Alpha Nu Omega Association Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student member of the Alpha Nu Omega fraternity who is completing their junior year, to be used for their senior year at Upper Iowa University.

Sodexo Campus Services Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the University’s former dining service provider to recognize deserving students for academic standards, and is also based on financial need.

William “Bill” Prochaska Endowed Scholarship
The William (Bill) Prochaska Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering their junior year majoring in Physical Education and Coaching.  The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.  The scholarship will be used toward the students’ junior year expenses at UIU.  Mr. Prochaska (Coach Pro) and his family have given this scholarship in honor of his 50 year affiliation with UIU as an alum, coach, athletic director and faculty member.

Bruce I. Campbell Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a UIU student with a preference for graduates of the Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock and Nora Springs Rock Falls school districts who are Floyd County residents and who demonstrate a financial need. Preference will also be given to students interested in pursuing a teaching and/or coaching career in smaller schools in Iowa or the Midwest and who are first generation college students or whose parents have minimal college backgrounds.

Established in honor of Dr. J. M. Murphy, a former Upper Iowa University Trustee, and Zinita Dickman Murphy, class of 1918, this scholarship is given to an academically deserving student.

Mary Kimball Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a rising junior with a major in accounting and a GPA of 3.5 or above. The scholarship would be renewable for the same student in their senior year if they maintain the 3.5 GPA scholarship. If there are no eligible accounting majors, a business administration major can be considered.

William F. and La Vonne I. Gutches Student Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed through the trust of La Vonne I. Gutches in memory of her husband, William F. Gutches, class of 1929 and an outstanding athlete at UIU, who went on to be a successful coach and athletic director. The award is to be given to a deserving student majoring in physical education and can be renewed if the recipient meets the established criteria.

This scholarship is named in honor of legendary UIU Football Coach and Hall of Famer, Everett “Eb” Eischeid. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a football student-athlete who is meeting NCAA progress toward degree requirements.

To honor the memory of Dr. G. C. Baker, eminent scientist, and to encourage outstanding work in science, the late Mrs. Thelma Tidgwell Baker Rick established this annual award as a tuition scholarship to a sophomore student who has shown exceptional ability in science.

Dennis and Marlene Murdock Leadership Scholarship
This scholarship shall be awarded to a rising junior, senior or student pursuing an advanced degree at UIU’s Fayette campus and who is in good academic standing with the University. Recipients will be nominated by a staff or faculty member in recognition of leadership attributes demonstrated by service to UIU clubs and organizations, Student Government Association, residence life, tutoring, and/or other extracurricular campus involvement.

Joe and Janet (Olson) Brady Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student with a grade point average of 2.75 or higher. Upper Iowa University was an important element in Joe and Janet’s life. Joe, class of 1941, would like to give thanks and pay tribute to the following people who played a key role in his education at UIU: Doc Dorman, Mrs. J. W. Dickman, Mrs. Coffman, Professor Raymond Deming, Professor Willis Harry Walker.

This scholarship shall be awarded to a deserving student involved in the following activities: Intercollegiate athletics, and or a university club or organization. A further donor criterion requires that the recipient is a rising senior with a minimum GPA of 3.2 with preference given to the student that has a high level of attendance at a variety of university sporting events

J. Paul and Sharroll Richards Scholarship
This scholarship was established by J. Paul and Sharroll Richards to be given to one or more deserving students pursuing teacher licensure at the elementary or secondary level. Eligible recipients must be a native of Iowa, Minnesota or Wisconsin and must be a student-athlete participating in a sport that hosts events a the Fayette campus. Preference will be given to a student with interest in becoming a certified coach.

Clark/Bowen Endowed Scholarship
Since 1973, Upper Iowa University has seen remarkable growth in the correspondence program, which today includes online, distance learning, and self-paced programs that have offered flexible learning to thousands of students worldwide. This scholarship was created by UIU in honor of Dr. Charles B. Clark and Roger Bowen. This scholarship will be awarded to an academically eligible recipient currently enrolled in a self-paced, online, or distance learning program and chosen by the Honors and Awards Committee. The recipient will be eligible to retain the scholarship while learning at Upper Iowa University. Help us honor these two pioneers in Upper Iowa University’s illustrious history with the creation of a scholarship in their names.

Northeast Iowa Charitable Foundation Scholarship
Established in 1997, this endowed scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students from the northeast Iowa area, with preference given to students from Oelwein.

The Dr. Austin J. Goldsmith Book Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student majoring in biology, chemistry or mathematics with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, who is intending to pursue graduate studies toward an M.D., M.S. or Ph.D degree in the future. The scholarship is to be used toward the purchase of books for classes during the next academic year. The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the faculty of the School of Science and Mathematics.

The John William Dickman Prize, founded by Mrs. Adella Maltbie Dickman in memory of her husband and former president of the University, is awarded annually to the seniors who have made the best four-year records. The Student Leadership Award is provided to a student who exhibits leadership and initiative in either the Peacocks Technology and Gaming Club and/or the Student Veterans Club.

The estate of Mary E. Babcock provided for these scholarships to honor the memory of Quintus C. Babcock, who settled in Fayette in 1857 and became one of Upper Iowa’s very first students.

The Herz Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Herz of Lead, South Dakota, established this scholarship. It is awarded annually by vote of the faculty to the sophomore student who has made the best record for the preceding two years, the selection being made on the basis of scholarship. The award is applied to the winner’s tuition during the junior year at Upper Iowa, one-half of the amount each semester.

Zecha – McCauley Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Gerald McCauley, class of 1961 and a former member of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Allen Zecha, an entrepreneur and friend of the University, to honor a second-year business student with an interest in international business. The student who receives this scholarship must have a 3.5 or higher grade point average, good leadership qualities and good character.

Belknap Baker Family Scholarship
Established by Genevieve Belknap Baker, class of 1936, in honor of her husband, Carleton Baker, class of 1934, and the Belknap and Baker families. Fifteen members of the Belknap and Baker families graduated from Upper Iowa University from 1865 to 1991 over 125 years. Genevieve attended Upper Iowa University on a full scholarship offered by Mrs. John Dickman, widow of John Dickman, president of Upper Iowa University.

Mrs. Ina Johnson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship in memory of Mrs. Ina Johnson was created by her son, Ted, a former trustee of Upper Iowa University, and his family. The recipient of this annual award is a deserving student in the biology field, selected by the awards committee and the head of the biology department.

This scholarship, provided by Dr. Louise Herring, English professor at Upper Iowa University from 1966-1974, is awarded annually to a student completing the sophomore year, to be selected by the English faculty on the basis of exemplary scholarship and sound character. Normally the scholarship is applied in equal portions to the student’s tuition during the junior and senior years.

Helen J. Monserud Scholarship in Sociology
The Helen J. Monserud Scholarship in Sociology was established for a deserving student majoring in sociology. Dr. Monserud taught at Upper Iowa University from 1948-1971. This scholarship will be matched by Pamela Spear Bul;at who was both a student of and teaching assistant for Helen Monserud.

Foster Cass Foundation Student Scholarship
Foster Cass ’41 established this scholarship in honor of his parents, Rev. Frank W. Cass and Carrie Jackley Cass, and family members who are UIU alumni: Edward J. Cass ’38, Marjorie Swales Cass ’39 and Betty Cass Hersey ’43. The Cass family was the University’s neighbor for many years, and there is a plaque commemorating the location on Union Street. Mr. Cass had a distinguished career in public education in Iowa and California. The scholarship is primarily intended for high school graduates from North Fayette, Elkader or Maquoketa Valley high schools or the greater northeast Iowa area.

The Paul and Margaret Pickett Scholarship is awarded to a recipient who is currently enrolled in, or has successfully completed, courses in calculus or advanced mathematics. Dr. Paul Pickett was professor of education from 1953 to 1975 and appreciated the importance of mathematics in one’s overall learning.

The John William Dickman Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to the student who best exemplifies the character, loyalty, dedication and personal values of John William Dickman, class of 1888, who served as a professor, dean, business officer, trustee and president of Upper Iowa University.

Each year the Iowa Society of CPAs recognizes universities in Iowa and their outstanding accounting students. These awards are based on senior students with GPAs at or near 4.0.

The Stuart and Roberta Dunkel Annual Scholarship
This award is given by Stuart ’64 and Roberta Dunkel to a student with a GPA of 3.2 or higher who is majoring in education and will begin student teaching in the fall or spring semester of the next academic year. Preference is given to students who plan to work in the United States or for a United States entity after graduation. The cash award is to be used by the student for related expenses such as travel or other living expenses. If there are no eligible students in education, a student may be selected first from the business disciplines, and next from the field of math or one of the natural science disciplines, commencing an internship during the next academic year.

The Brooke Kerns Endowed Scholarship
To honor the memory of Brooke Kerns, athletic training program director and assistant professor of athletic training, the Kerns family established an endowed scholarship because Brooke thought so much of her students. This scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student majoring in athletic training. Only if there is not an athletic training major at Upper Iowa University the scholarship will be awarded to an education major. The scholarship will be awarded to a student completing his/her sophomore or junior year to be used for his/her junior or senior year at Upper Iowa University. The student must have a grade point average of 3.25 or above.

This scholarship for deserving students pursuing a major in natural sciences was established by Dr. Catherine McVicker in honor of her husband, Dr. Gary McVicker, class of ’63. Preference is given to graduates of Boone (Iowa) High School, and the scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient continues to qualify.

Pande Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence A. Pande, Jr., president of Professional Food-Service Management, Inc. (PFM). Upper Iowa University was the first food service account for PFM. The scholarship is awarded each year to deserving students.

This scholarship fund was established from the estate of Winifred A. Young, to be used for tuition grants to deserving students of the University.

This scholarship shall be awarded to adult learners at a non-Fayette campus location. Recipients must have completed no fewer than 30 credits and be in good academic standing with the University. Recipients will be nominated by a staff or faculty member in recognition of their ability to overcome obstacles in pursuit of an education.

Andres Education Scholarship
Established through a lead gift by Betty R. Andres, class of 1946, and matching funds from education alumni, this scholarship honors the contributions Betty and the late William A. Andres, class of 1948, have made to Upper Iowa University. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore education student for use in the junior year. The scholarship is renewable for the student’s senior year if the criteria are still met.

This scholarship is awarded to a rising junior with a major in accounting and a GPA of 3.5 or above. The scholarship would be renewable for the same student in their senior year if they maintain the 3.5 GPA scholarship. Students must also have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have a record of extracurricular involvement, with preference given to students residing in Butler or Floyd County, Iowa. Pam Whitmore, Class of 1965, taught for five years in Wisconsin Public Schools, 30 years with the Department of Defense Overseas Schools, and four years with Upper Iowa University as an assistant professor in the department of education. Pam supervised student teachers while at Upper Iowa and became a strong supporter of student teachers. Because of her strong support and love for her students, she and her husband, Fred Koch, are giving a cash award to a student with a GPA of 3.75 or higher who will be student teaching beginning in the fall or spring semester of the next academic year. The scholarship will be given to a student majoring in education.

The Environmental Leadership Scholarship received its first donation in 2008 and was first awarded in 2015. The scholarship is awarded to a new or returning student with demonstrated career interest in environmental sustainability and solutions. Roberts Student Scholarship in memory of their uncle, Beecher B. Beal, class of 1907, and their parents, Bertha (Beal) Roberts, class of 1907, and Thomas R. Roberts, class of 1905. This is an annual award for one or more students pursuing a career in education, ministry, social work, medicine or nursing. Students must also have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have a record of extracurricular involvement, with preference given to students residing in Butler or Floyd County, Iowa. The award is renewable if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

Established through a lead gift by Betty R. Andres, class of 1946, and matching funds from business alumni, this scholarship honors the late William A. Andres, class of 1948, and the Andres family’s contributions to Upper Iowa University. William A. Andres was CEO of the Dayton/Hudson Corporation, now the Target Corporation. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore business student for use in the junior year. The scholarship is renewable for the student’s senior year if the criteria are still met.

Blanche Cole Gloss Memorial Scholarship
Because of her family’s long association with Upper Iowa University, this scholarship was established in memory of Blanche Cole Gloss, Class of 1904, to be given to a deserving student.

The Brooke Kerns Endowed Scholarship
To honor the memory of Brooke Kerns, athletic training program director and assistant professor of athletic training, the Kerns family established an endowed scholarship because Brooke thought so much of her students. This scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student majoring in athletic training. Only if there is not an athletic training major at Upper Iowa University the scholarship will be awarded to an education major. The scholarship will be awarded to a student completing his/her sophomore or junior year to be used for his/her junior or senior year at Upper Iowa University. The student must have a grade point average of 3.25 or above.

Foster Cass Foundation Student Scholarship
Foster Cass ’41 established this scholarship in honor of his parents, Rev. Frank W. Cass and Carrie Jackley Cass, and family members who are UIU alumni: Edward J. Cass ’38, Marjorie Swales Cass ’39 and Betty Cass Hersey ’43. The Cass family was the University’s neighbor for many years, and there is a plaque commemorating the location on Union Street. Mr. Cass had a distinguished career in public education in Iowa and California. The scholarship is primarily intended for high school graduates from North Fayette, Elkader or Maquoketa Valley high schools or the greater northeast Iowa area.

Stevens Family Scholarship
This scholarship shall be awarded to a junior with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and majoring in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education.

Faculty Appreciation Endowed Scholarship
This award, sponsored by alumni Dr. Richard Tesoriero, Dr. Donald Foley and Dr. Kurt Wood, is made to an outstanding sophomore who is majoring in biology and chemistry, and if no double major is available, then biology or chemistry, favoring prechiropractic. The award is applied to the student’s junior year financial aid package at Upper Iowa University. Prospective award recipients are recommended to the Honors and Awards Committee by the senior faculty member in the biology department and the chemistry department.

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Eleanor Parker Fox, class of 1926, and Dr. Robert L. Fox, class of 1928, in memory and in honor of Mrs. Fox’s parents. The Parker and Fox families have a long association with Upper Iowa University, going back to the early years of the University’s history. The scholarship is given annually to a third-year student who has exceptionally high grades in the biological sciences and is recommended by the science faculty.

This scholarship will be awarded to an academically eligible recipient currently enrolled in a self-paced, online, or distance learning program and chosen by the Honors and Awards Committee.
