Knight Endowed Scholarship awarded

Upper Iowa University recently awarded a 2017 North Fayette Valley High School graduate with the Carlton W. Knight and Maxine R. Knight Endowed Scholarship. Josie Roulson, daughter of Cynthia Roulson-Bills and Ron Bills of West Union, Iowa, is a UIU freshman majoring in elementary education. She also intends to seek English, English as a Second Language (ESL), reading, grammar and art endorsements.

Prior to graduating from North Fayette Valley High School in West Union, Roulson participated in robotics, band, jazz band, cheerleading, dance line and bowling. While attending UIU, she is an active Education Club and Mock Trial team member.

The Knight Endowed Scholarship pays tribute to Carlton W. Knight and Maxine R. Knight, proprietors of the former Knight Hardware, located on Fayette’s Main Street from 1900-1965. The annual award, which benefits an incoming UIU student, was established in 2004 by son Dr. Kip Knight ’62 and Eileen Knight.

Recipients of the award are selected among deserving individuals from within the customer base or trade area served by the family-owned and operated Knight’s Hardware. Preference is given to students who have participated in extracurricular activities, worked in the family business or family farm to “support or enhance their family standard of living” and who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.
