Alternative Spring Break fundraiser January 19

Since 2000, approximately 160 Upper Iowa University students have traveled to a dozen states and four countries to provide volunteer services to local residents. As part of the University’s Alternative Spring Break program, teams of college students and their chaperones are placed in communities to engage in positive social action and education.

The program goals range from increasing cultural awareness, to bringing academic learning to life, or to creating a life-long service ethic. UIU encourages participation by any student, regardless of enrollment location.

This year’s 20 participating students have chosen to assist with volunteer efforts in and around Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Juneau, Alaska, in March 2018. The community service projects include work at Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Native American centers, food shelters and rehabilitation of trails.

In an effort to offset travel costs, the students are hosting a Chili Supper/Cinnamon Roll Fundraiser on Friday, January 19. Serving will be from 4:45 – 6:45 p.m. in Dorman Gymnasium at Fayette Campus. The fundraiser precedes the Peacock wrestling match against Minnesota State University. Tickets for both events can be purchased at the door.
