‘Five Years Out’ reception for UIU alumnae
Upper Iowa University senior Elijah Solheim closely examines the artwork of UIU alumna Becky Althouse ’16 at the recently opened “Five Years Out” exhibit at Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery in Fayette. “Five Years Out” features the works of five UIU alumnae who have been making and practicing art within a variety of fields since their college graduation.
The 2017-18 Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery art show season continues with “Five Years Out,” an exhibit featuring the works of five Upper Iowa University alumnae who have been making and practicing art within a variety of fields. The exhibition is open through Friday, November 3. A dessert reception will coincide with UIU’s Homecoming celebration on Thursday, October 26. The special event will be held from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the Gallery.
“After graduating from UIU, these young artists have started to forge a path in the art world,” UIU Associate Professor of Art Elissa Wenthe said. “This group exhibit, premised on the affiliation with their alma mater, inevitably connected these young women together through a wide variety of mediums and career choices. Whether an art educator, art therapist, world traveler or entrepreneurial artist, each of these young women are making a name for themselves in the diverse and ever-changing art world, and I could not be more proud of them.”
The featured artists include:
Jenna (Smith) Hughes ’13 grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa, before earning an art education degree at UIU. Hughes currently teaches high school art in Denver, Colorado, where she is also an active member of NEXT Gallery. Her UIU exhibit is a reflection of “nature vs. nurture” and the role the environment plays in her artwork.
Becky Althouse ’16 currently teaches English in Fukushima, Japan. Althouse earned bachelor’s degrees in studio arts and environmental science while attending UIU. Originally from Postville, Iowa, Althouse studied art in the Netherlands in 2015 and later traveled Europe for two months. She has helped lead many projects that involve the community, area youth, and the advocacy of the environment and the arts.
Becky Carpenter-Barnes ’16 resides in Brookings, South Dakota. Her artwork explores the sensuality of reproductive forms in nature. Focusing on the beauty and simplicity of monochromatic color to accentuate a limited variety of color values found within its shape, the graphic element is purposely sharp while highlighting the unpredictable nature of fertility.
Daphne Barness ‘14 of St. Louis, Missouri, earned a master’s degree in art therapy from Southern Illinois State University in Edwardsville in 2017. She is currently an art therapist at Castlewood Treatment Center in St. Louis.
Marisa (Goerend) Krivachek ’16 of St. Lucas, Iowa, opened Blue Peacock Pottery after graduating from UIU. She frequently shows her work at art and craft fairs such as the Elkader Arts in the Park, Northeast Iowa Art Tour and the K&K Art and Vendor Show.
Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery is located in Edgar Fine Arts Hall at UIU’s Fayette Campus. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
