A sophomore from Spring Valley, Illinois, has been elected the 2017-18 Upper Iowa University Student Government Association (SGA) president. Hayley Cessna, a chemistry major, was recently elected alongside four additional officers at UIU’s Fayette Campus.
Cessna, who plans to attend a physician’s assistant school following her UIU education, is a member of Gamma Delta Phi, Peacocks for Progress, Love Your Melon, Resident Life, Student Senate and Peer Mentors. She is also active in the University’s Csomay Honors and Pre-Professional programs.
“I wanted to run for Student Government President because I enjoyed serving in the same role in high school,” said Cessna, a graduate of Hall High School in Spring Valley. “I also enjoy being involved in Upper Iowa activities and this provides me an opportunity to do even more. As president, I want to try and make a difference by representing all UIU students. I would like to leave an imprint here by making positive changes to the role the SGA president plays at our University.”
In addition to Cessna, the newly elected 2017-18 Upper Iowa University SGA officers are as follows:
Vice President Cory Mullins of West Des Moines, Iowa, is a sophomore financial management and marketing major. He is involved in Beta Delta Phi, Phi Beta Lambda, Enactus, Csomay Honors, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Student Advisor Board for School of Business and Student Senate. A member of the UIU men’s golf team, Mullins also serves as a student ambassador.
“I chose to run for Student Government Vice President because I enjoyed being involved in Student Senate. Student Senate raised my interest in becoming more involved at the University and Student Government in order to make positive changes here. I also want to give back to the school for all it has given me.”
Secretary Breyanna Hill of Oskaloosa, Iowa, is a UIU freshman majoring in elementary education with endorsements in reading, art and special education. She is involved in UIU track, cross country, Peacocks for Progress, and Gamma Delta Phi.
“I decided to run for Student Government because I wanted to get more involved at UIU. I really enjoyed devoting my time to student council and executive council in high school, and wanted to continue doing so in college.”
Treasurer John Garcia formerly of Mission, Texas, is majoring in biology at UIU with plans to attend a medical school. Garcia is active in Peacock Entertainment Crew, Peacocks for Progress, Science and Environment, Veterans, Criminal Justice, Soccer Club and PTAG. He also serves as SGA Student Senate representative for a few of the aforementioned organizations.
“I wished to hold office because I believe having a voice is important and I wish to do the best things possible for the student body.”
Academic Extension Officer Mikayla Nassy-Wong of Toronto, Canada, is majoring in psychology, with a minor in sport and exercise studies. A member of the Peacock women’s soccer team, her plans are to later earn a postgraduate degree in sport psychology.
“I decided to run for student government because I thought it would be a really good opportunity for me to gain political experience and learn more about executive actions. I like the idea of being able to represent the student body, listen to issues and find solutions to problems.”
SGA agendas are emailed to UIU students before every scheduled meeting. Unless otherwise notified, all meetings are held at 12:15 p.m. every other Monday in the Student Center Ballroom at Fayette Campus. For additional information, contact email@example.com.
