Upper Iowa University will host its 31st annual Honors and Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 2. Over $110,000 in scholarships will be presented during the 2016 event, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the UIU Student Center Ballroom in Fayette. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., with the program to follow.
Among the scholarships bestowed each year to a deserving student is the Belknap Baker Family Scholarship. UIU Alumna Genevieve Belknap Baker ’36 established the award in 2006 in in honor of her husband, Carleton Baker ‘34, and the Belknap and Baker families. Fifteen members of the Belknap and Baker families graduated from Upper Iowa University over a 125-year period.
Genevieve, herself, attended Upper Iowa University on a full scholarship offered by Adella Dickman, widow of former UIU President John Dickman. Baker served on the UIU Board of Trustees from 1952-66. A longtime educator, she formerly worked in the Canton, Minn., Ridgeway, Iowa, and Decorah, Iowa, schools, before becoming an instructor at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa, and Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Now living in Tucson, Ariz., Baker celebrated her 100th birthday in December 2015.
In addition to the 2016 award/scholarship recipients, all donors and family members of donors in attendance will be recognized for their ongoing support of the University during the April 2 event.
