UIU online psychology and accounting programs recognized

OnlineColleges.net has ranked a pair of Upper Iowa University’s online programs among the top in the nation. Focusing on emerging trends and developments in online education, OnlineColleges.net ranked UIU 7th among universities to offer an online bachelor’s degree in psychology and 21st in offering an online master’s degree in accounting.

Upper Iowa was recognized by OnlineColleges.net for providing distance learners the options of enrolling in online or self-paced programs. The online programming offers an online classroom interactive environment with weekly deadlines. Enrollment periods are eight weeks, with six start dates per year. The self-paced web-based program also offers online classroom environments, but gives students flexibility to work at their own pace, with six-month enrollment periods and 12 start dates per year.

As part of UIU’s psychology program, students discover how to interpret psychological theory using the scientific method. With a focus on analyzing, predicting, describing and shaping human behavior, graduates are equipped to become leaders in fields such as human services, law, education, communications and health. Those wanting pursue a graduate education will be well prepared for advanced coursework.

Online students may transfer up to 90 hours of undergraduate credit toward the psychology degree. The major includes completion of the general education core, plus 36 semester credits in the major, with at least 18 in upper division coursework. Distance learners have access to an online library, Read & Write Gold literacy software, tutoring services and writing resources. Coursework is completed using a learning management system.

Meanwhile, UIU offers a master of business administration degree with an emphasis in accounting. Completion of the program requires 36 credits.

OnlineColleges.net noted the program’s core curriculum covers economics, market analysis and business theory. A research seminar provides a capstone experience, for which students prepare a report to demonstrate their capacity to integrate course knowledge into a professional environment. All coursework emphasizes both theory and application with the development of strong leadership, ethics and risk assessment skills.

Similar to the psychology program, courses are offered in six eight-week terms per year, delivered online through a Pearson LearningStudio portal. Classes are asynchronous in format, allowing students maximum flexibility in their schedule; many require team projects to help students develop highly valued teamwork skills.

To evaluate the online programming of universities nationwide in both programs, academics, student experience, financial aid, and enrollment were compared. OnlineColleges.net has served as a resource of prospective students since 2009.
