UIU to pay tribute to service personnel during Family Weekend

As part of its Family Weekend celebration, Upper Iowa University will salute active military personnel and pay tribute to veterans attending the Saturday, Oct. 24, UIU Peacock football game vs Southwest Minnesota State. In addition to recognizing UIU alumni and current students who have served in the military and/or their respective communities as a police officer, fire fighter, paramedic, etc., during the halftime ceremony, a military video tribute will be featured during the event.

“This upcoming Salute to Service celebration is another example of UIU’s ongoing commitment to all the men and women, who have or who are currently serving this great country,” said William R. Duffy II, UIU President. “Upper Iowa University has been a proud supporter of military men and women since the American Civil War and is continuously seeking new ways to provide educational resources that best fit the needs of today’s military personnel and their families.”

Fans are encouraged to wear red, white and blue or military attire to each of UIU’s athletic events on Saturday, Oct. 24. The women’s soccer team plays Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m., while the volleyball squad takes on Minnesota Crookston at 3 p.m. Kickoff for the football game is set at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, Upper Iowa University’s Student Government, PAST organization, and Veteran’s Club are organizing a wall of honor that allows the UIU family to place the names of service men and women on display Tables will be set up at the soccer, volleyball, and football games during the Oct. 24 event for people to post red stars with the names of military servicemen, -women, and other personnel.

Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to write thank you letters to these individuals. In an effort to make the letters more personal, participants are encouraged to write to specific honorees. Persons who know of someone who is in active duty or is a military veteran, police officer, firefighter, or is involved with any other service entity and who would appreciate receiving mail are asked to submit an address for that specific individual. Feel free to nominate multiple people (friends, family, current students, etc.) by filling out a Google form at http://goo.gl/forms/LLQ5OMeZfa.
